Today, our family dog passed away. His name was Frasier, and he was a German Shepherd/Chow mix. He lived with my parents in Texas, but I spend 7 years living with him too before I went to college. I picked him out as a puppy. He was the roly poly chubby puppy of the bunch. He grew up to be a very handsome boy!
He just turned 10 in October. He was the most active and healthy dog I know of. He never showed any signs of aging. They were not sure what happened for sure. After he died they took him into surgery and found he had a cancerous tumor on his spleen that had ruptured. This is apparently an aggressive form of cancer that goes undetected can cause sudden death. Even if they had found it sooner the prognosis would of been poor.
I'm numb by this. I had grown up with animals who had been ill and passed away or old and passed away. Frasier was in tip top shape and up until yesterday morning. I really don't believe it. On Thursday on he phone with my parents I heard him jumping around and barking happily. I feel sad I live so far away and wasn't able to see him in a long time. He was a great dog and great member of the family. I feel upset for my parents. They loved this dog so much, as did I. They also have had a vacation planned for awhile and they are leaving today. I know this wasn't the ideal situation they'd want to go off on vacation with. I still hope they are able to enjoy their time off since they both work so hard.
On the somewhat brighter side, I'm glad Frasier had life full of good health and happiness. He will be missed by our family so much. No one can replace him. He was the sweetest boy.
Have a nice Saturday,
Oh Steph, I'm so sorry! :( I can't imagine what it's like to lose a part of your family like that over night.
ReplyDeleteI'm not that great with words of condolences, but I am good at offering e-hugs!
******hugs galore*****
I'm so sorry Steph, it's so hard to lose a member of your family, especially one who doesn't always understand what is going on. It sounds like he had a super rich life with a great family who loved him so take comfort in that.

ReplyDeleteI'm the same as Mimi, I'm not great with the words.. But I'm really sorry. I know how shocking that is.. Our family dog died a couple years ago when he was 10 and he had been perfectly active and healthy as well. It was very random. Again, I'm so sorry for you and your parents. Hugs!!

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry!!
ReplyDeleteI lost my dog to Lymphoma last December, it still hurts!
How terribly sad you must be. It does sound like Frasier had a great life. Hugs to you during your time of grief.
ReplyDeletei am so sorry to hear this, I went through a similar thing last year when my chihuahua just overnight grew a large tumor on the side of his neck, we battled cancer for 4 months and it was very tough. He made it to 10.5 years and it was very difficult to say good buy but i know he's at peace now.I still have his mother she'll be 13 in april and im doing what i can to keep her for as long as i can , she has heart issues and is on 4 different meds. But i totally understand how you feel i've had these dogs since my teens. Animals have a way of getting into our hearts and staying there forever even after they have to move on. He will live on in all the good memories you have of him!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for you and your family. These pets are no less than full-fledged family members--only they never fight with us or make fun of us--they're better than family! Know that he had a happy life thanks to you all, and that as much as gave to him throughout his life, he gave you so much more. Sending hugs and prayers your way, and I can promise you it does get easier with time. But you never stop missing them--Greta & Gus send you a German Shepherd fur-filled hug :))
ReplyDeleteOh Stephanie, I'm so sorry about your dog. He looks so sweet in that picture.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for your loss. It's very difficult to lose a family pet. It's like losing a member of the family. My heart goes out to you!

ReplyDeleteSo very sorry! Gotta go give my baby, Zoe, a hug! She's 4 & I'm so paranoid something like this will happen to her! I just lost my 18 1/2 year old cat & still grieving. It was like losing a child! Know that he knew he was loved & had a better life than a lot of people. That's what I've had to tell myself when he couldn't fight anymore & I had to make that decision noone should ever have to make. It helps a little. *hugs* :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for your loss! :( I had a dog like that too he was the best dog I ever had. When he died I cried so much cause he really was my best friend growing up. RIP Frasier. :(

Terribly sorry for you. I know what it's like to lose a pet suddenly. My birds mean the world to me - 1 day I walked outside with both on my shoulder and one flew away, never to be seen again. I grieved and felt so guilty for months. Hope it gets better for you.

I am so sorry to hear this Steph. My condolences to you and your parents. Although it's hard not to have had a chance to say goodbye, I am glad that Frasier didn't suffer and was happy and full of life to the end. If you've never heard about the Rainbow Bridge, it's worth a google.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for your loss - he was so beautiful. My husband's parents recently lost both of their dogs, and it's been very hard for them. I'm glad your family had such a good, long time with Frasier - a good dog is such a treasure.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about Frasier Steph, especially when his death was so sudden. :( My thoughts go out to you and your family whilst you grieve.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for your loss. Our cat has been gone a year and a half but a day doesn't go by without us thinking of her and missing her so much. Pets really are family members, when she left she took a piece of our hearts with her. No doubt, you and your parents feel the same way about Frasier. Sending you love and hugs, and my condolences.
