HPB Presents: August Neon Mani

It's time for another Hobby Polish Bloggers blog link-up. The theme for August was neon. I'm thankful, I can do neon, doesn't require me to figure out nail art! I had fun time picking out colors for this mani. It also made me realize I'm low on neons. Low, as in I maybe only have 15, which would be plenty for most people, but I feel like I need more. I know I'm insane. Here is what I came up with!

Polishes Used: Orly Hot Tropics, Color Club Warhol, LeChat Honeydew, and KBShimmer Sun & Games.

Check out my fellow HPB members manis below!

Throwback Thursday: Orly Gumdrop

I have another Orly throwback to share with you today. One thing I've noticed since doing my throwback posts is how spoiled I am now with nail polish formulas. I have to thank indies for that. Mainstream polish formulas then and even now are very average to below average especially when it comes to pastels or neons. What's interesting is 5 years ago I would consider these older mainstream formulas and even current ones good, but now they're average to below average. This older Orly pastel really reminded me how thankful I am for amazing indie pastel cremes!

Gumdrop
Gumdrop is a soft aqua/mint creme.

Collection: Orly Sweet Collection Spring 2010

Color: This is a beautiful colors. I like the softness of this color and that is has a touch more blue to it than other mint/aqua shades. I want to say this color was the beginning of the mint green craze back when I started getting into nail polish. The color is a beautiful pastel that isn't stark or too contrasting with my skin tone.

Formula: I don't think this formula is bad. It's really not, but compared to other pastel cremes I have today from KBShimmer and other indies it's lacking. The formula was OK by today's standards. I did find it did not level or smooth out evenly on my nail well. I used 2 coats above.

Price: I'm pretty sure this is part of the core line of Orly. I see it listed on Sally's and Ulta's website. You can also find this on other e-tailers in the $5-$8 range.

Overall: I love the softness and beauty of Gumdrop. It's a fun and perfectly spring-like color. The formula isn't my favorite, but it wasn't bad either. I have definite feelings of nostalgia with this one, but also would be more likely to use a similar color with a better formula.

Throwback Thursday: Orly La Playa

I have an all-time favorite Orly throwback polish to share with you today. This is was a polish I wore and still wear at least a few times a year. It's perfect for summer even though you may not think so off the bat. I promise this is a summer a color!

La Playa
La Play is a vibrant navy creme.

Collection: Orly Viva Collection Summer 2010

Color: I know navy in summer may not seem to fit for some people. This color really works though. This isn't a muted or blacked navy you might see in fall or winter. This has some vibrancy and brightness to it that gives it some pop. If you're craving a darker color fit for summer La Playa is your girl for sure.

Formula: Superb formula on this one. This is easy to use and needed 2 coats only. This dries super shiny too.

Price: You can find this on e-tailers in the $5-$8 range.

Overall: This is a tried and true summer favorite for me. I love the saturation of this color and the perfect formula. This pairs nicely with neons for accent nails and nail art. I also recommend using some of the translucent and and metallic flakies on La Playa too. I've worn this so many ways, and I always love it. La Playa is must have in my book!

Orly Bling

I'm running out of time for holiday polish! When did Christmas sneak up so quickly? I have another Orly Sparkle polish to share with you today.

Bling over Cult Nails Sublime
Bling is a gold holographic microglitter in a clear base.

Color: What I like about this is the intensity of this glitter. There is a lot of it, and it really makes a statement on your nails. Also, gold holographic glitter toppers are hard to come by. I prefer gold ones over silver, and I rarely seem them.

Formula: The formula was a bit thick, that could be due to the fact I have a mini bottle. This is does build up, but not to complete opacity. I think this packs more of punch layered.

Price: This can be purchased in the $7 range at Sally's, Ulta, and many e-tailers.

Overall: I really like this glitter topper. It's perfect for the holidays, but it also fills a bit of a void when ti comes to holo toppers. The formula wa a bit on the thick side to my personal liking.

Orly Mirrorball

I have a very popular polish to share with you today from the Orly Sparkle collection--Mirrorball. This is one of those rare finds when it comes to mainstream retail nail polish that's for sure. It's easy to see why Mirrorball got a lot of buzz!

Mirrorball
Mirrorball is a silver linear holo with sparse holograhpic glitter.

Collection: Orly Sparkle Holiday 2014

Color: You rarely find holos of this quality in mainstream brands anymore. This is a bright and beautiful silver holo. The picture speaks for itself here.

Formula: The formula was easy to work, but was a tad bit sheer. I used 3 coats here.

Price: This can purchased in the $7-$8 range at Sally's, Ulta, and online retailers. You rarely find holos priced like this!

Overall: Excellent all around polish. This is such a nice surprise in the mainstream market, and I hope more brands follow suit. The price is great, and this is a definite must have for polish addicts.

Orly Glitterbomb

I have another polish from the Orly Sparkle holiday collection to show you today. You know what I really don't like about this collection? I really wish they had some festive names for the polishes. It's a holiday collection, and I want some holiday cheer! The polishes certainly are festive, but not the names. I know a dumb complaint. It's not a huge deal.

Glitterbomb over Sinful Colors Candy Coated
Glitterbomb is a multicolored glitter and  micro iridescent glitter in a clear base.

Color: I love multicolored glitter toppers. This one varies a different from the rest because the colors in here are bit muted, and not as vibrant. What I also noticed is this has a very subtle teeny tiny iridescent micro glitter added to it. This makes it all the more sparkly.

Formula: I found this formula bit thick and a bit sparse glitter wise. The thickness could be attributed to the fact I have a mini bottle. The sparseness is just how it is. I used 2 coats above. I really wish this glitter was a little more dense, so it could pack a bigger punch.

Price: This can be purchased in the $7-$8 range at Ulta. I bought it in a mini set that included 3 other polishes for around $10.

Overall: This is a pretty glitter polish, it could just be so much better if it were denser. Oh, and calling it something a little more holiday themed instead of Glitterbomb, would of made me happier too. I won't count against the name though.

Orly Explosion of Fun

I think it's time I break out the holiday polishes because there isn't much time left! The end of the year is closing on us quickly. Today, I have one of the Orly Sparkle polishes to share with you.

Explosion of Fun over OPI Pamplona Purple
Explosion of Fun is a fuchsia glitter, holo glitter, and blue/purple shimmer in a clear base.

Color: This is a great nail polish color wise. I love the combination of glitter and the shimmer, but outside of color this really fails for me.

Formula: This formula is a mess. The bottle of this is stunning, but I was sorely disappointed on how this looks on the nail. This is sheer, it doesn't build up well at all. The formula was thick, and already starting to separate in the bottle.

Price: I found this at Ulta in the $7-$8 range.

Overall: This was a  huge disappointment for me. Explosion of Fun is so beautiful in the bottle. This really should of been an opaque glitter. The formula is a mess and leaves a lot to be desired. I feel like I was deceived by this beautiful bottle of polish. Yes, you can layer it, like I did, but it's not my favorite look.. I think you can pass on this one, don't be fooled by a pretty face!

Throwback Thursday: Orly Oui

The next few Throwback Thursdays I will be featuring some of my past favorite holiday polishes. This next Orly one was a definite stunner to me a few years back, and one I always seem to revisit this time of year.

Oui
Orly Oui is a rich purple with an intense golden shimmer.

Collection: Holiday Soiree 2011

Color: This color came out when a ton of other brands were doing repetitive pink versions of this color Zoya Faye, OPI Really Rally Pink, Orly Ingenue, OPI It's My Year, and so on. Oui on the other
hand has a very clear purple base. It's a beautiful color, and the gold shimmer is very much in the forefront. This is a perfect holiday color without it screaming "I have Christmas on my nails!".

Formula: The formula on this is average-good. I find the formula a bit thinner than I'd like, and I needed 3 coats. Not a deal breaker by any means, but in 2014, a color like this should be more pigmented.

Price: If you do a Google search of this you'll find many options in the $6-$7 range for purchase.

Overall: I really love Oui. I love a purple and I love gold shimmer! This combines both for a really blingy and festive nail polish.

Throwback Thursday: Orly Frisky

I think the biggest buzz I've seen with nail polish this summer is with Maybelline Bleached Neons. Pastel brights are definitely in, but I know that Maybelline collection hasn't been easy to find. I haven't found a dupe to a color in that collection, but if you're into those pastel bright shades, I think I have one that maybe right up your alley from a 2011 Orly collection.

Frisky
Frisky is a bright turquoise creme.

Collection: Orly Happy Go Lucky Summer 2011

Color: This is an outstanding color. This is hands down one of my favorite nail polish colors ever. Frisky even made it into my Top 20 of 2011 nail polishes. This color is so saturated and bright that you cannot help, but love it. Just look at it!

Formula: This is what makes the polish even more spectacular. The formula on this is perfection. This applies like buttah. I used 2 coats above, but I think some people could get away with one if they use a thicker coat.

Price: This is part of Orly's core line, and is priced at $8.00 at Ulta.

Overall: Frisky is amazing, and definitely on trend for summer 2014 even thought it was released in 2011. I think this a must have color in every nail polish collection. Just look at it again! This would make an awesome pedicure color too. Best part, you can go drive to your Ulta and pick it up today! Go now!

Orly Hot Tropics

*-Waves- I'm back!!! Many thanks to my wonderful guest posters last week while I was away!

Today, I have another amazing polish from the summer Orly Baked collection. This has hands down been my favorite mainstream collection of summer. Orly did an amazing job with this collection. This next one is definitely a favorite.

Hot Tropics
Hot Tropics is a bright orchid with an intense shimmer.

Color: This is a beautiful purple-pink shade. My problem is my camera couldn't capture this richness of this color. I will say this a little more purple than is shown in the photo. I love this bright color, and the shimmer is the really winning point of this polish.

Formula: Excellent easy to use formula. I used 2 coats above.

Price: I paid around $7-$8 for this at Sally's Beauty Supply.

Overall: This is another stunner from the Baked collection. The shimmer in these bright/neon polishes really are a beautiful addition and done right. I highly recommend Hot Tropics. I don't think anyone could go wrong with it. My only complaint, my camera couldn't capture just how awesome it is!

TTFN & Orly Ablaze

*Ta ta for now, friends! This Sunday, I'm off for vacation for 6 days! This will be my first vacation in 3 years! I'll be spending time with my boyfriend and parents on the central coast of California for some relaxation and cooler weather. I have some amazing guest posters for you all next week. I'll be around on social media, but I won't be blogging until I get back! See you back here on June 30th!*

Orly totally nailed it with their summer Baked collection. I haven't been this excited over a mainstream collection in a long time. Neons cremes are everywhere.  I love neon cremes, but I get it. Been there. It's been done. Let's try something different. How about adding some shimmer into these neons? Orly, thank you! I have one of the standouts of this collection for you today.

**Note I did have to adjust light and color for to show an accurate representation of this shade

Ablaze
Ablaze is a neon orange with a golden shimmer.

Color: Do I even really need to comment? This is a fiery neon orange with a standout shimmer. I've seen shimmers in neons before that barely show on the nail. This shimmer isn't joking around. This is one amazing and incredible nail polish color.

Formula: Excellent easy to apply formula. Zero complaints. I used 2 coats above.

Price: I purchased this at Sally's Beauty Supply in the $7 range.

Overall: Go out and get Orly Ablaze now. You need this. I think it's mandatory for every polish addict to get this color. This is an incredible neon! Must have. This is totally a contender for the Top 25 of 2014. I won't even call it a contender. This will be on the list. There is a spoiler for you. Get this polish!

Orly Tropical Pop

I have not been impressed by mainstream brands at all lately. I haven't bought a single polish from a summer collection from OPI, China Glaze, or Zoya. Orly is a brand I used to really love. I feel like in the past 2-3 years, they really have been going under the radar. When I saw their summer collection though, a love was reignited. Orly's Baked collection is a home run, and totally kicks any other mainstream brand's summer collection out of the park. I have Tropical Pop to share with you today.

Tropical Pop
Tropical Pop is neon tangerine creme.

Color: Whoa! No playing around here. This is a beautiful bright yellow-orange creme. I don't typically wear oranges and yellows, but if I do they're going to be obnoxiously in your face ones. This is an awesome color. This kind of reminds me of like neon mac n' cheese. Lol.

Formula: This wasn't the greatest formula to me. It was manageable, but I found this to be a bit thick, goopy, and hard to control. I also found it had some self-leveling issues. I did 3 coats here. It's not a terrible formula, but one that required some extra attention.

Price: I paid in the $7-$8 range for this at Sally's Beauty Supply.

Overall: I just love this color. Tropical Pop is so out of my normal realm of what I'd wear, and I think that's what makes me love it more. As much I love this polish and want to give it 5 paint splatters, the formula really holds this one back. It's not a deal breaker though, and if you like this color, I think it's worth a little effort.

Orly Pixie Powder

*You have one week left to enter my Beautifully Disney giveaway!

I have another polish from the Orly Surreal fall collection for you today. This is another standout polish to me from this collection. One, because it's so not typical for fall, and two because it's just flat out gorgeous!

Pixie Powder over Sally Hansen Lacey Lilac
Pixie Powder is a lavender micro glitter with a slight golden/pink flash in a clear base.

Color: This glitter in this is so delicate and beautiful. They named this correctly by including the name Pixie in it. Pixie Powder does look magical. I love how at certain angles you can see hints of pink and gold shine in this glitter.

Formula: The formula on this was smooth and easy to use. I used 2 coats over a base.

Price: I think I paid around $8.50 for this at Ulta.

Overall: Beautiful glitter topper here. I think this is stunning. My only complaint, is I wish this had fuller coverage.

Orly Digital Glitter

Has anyone else been disappointed by the mainstream brand fall collections? I have found many of them to be so dull and repetitive. Yawn.

Orly went ahead and did something entirely different for fall with the Surreal collection. The colors in this collection are soft shades and rich shades, with some fun glitters and shimmers in the mix. It is a eclectic mix for fall, but it works, and it's truly nice to see something different. I have Digital Glitter from that collection to share with you today.

Digital Glitter over Cult Nails Nevermore
Digital Glitter is a duochrome glitter with holographic glitters mixed in a clear base.

Color: This is an interesting one. You know Orly Space Cadet? The color of the glitter in this is exactly Space Cadet, just in glitter form. The glitter does have a cool duochrome effect that I could not pick up on camera. I really like this one, it's very cool and unexpected for glitter!

Formula: This is sheer. You have to layer this one. I used 3 coats over a base here.

Price: I paid around $8.00 for this at Ulta.

Overall: This a cool glitter mix. I've never really seen a duochrome glitter like this in a mainstream brand before. It's fun and unique and I like it. My only beef is I wish this was full coverage glitter. The sheerness of it lowers it a bit for me.

Orly Elation Generation

*Today is the last day to enter my Urban Outfitters Polish Giveaway!

I do this blog differently than some. I usually swatch a bunch of my new polish at once, take notes on each, and create an entire swatch library of photos. This allows me to have a lot of material to choose from to blog about. This is just what works for me, since I do not change my nails daily.

Anyways, in my swatch library I usually have anywhere between 30-100 nail polish swatches at any given time. What I notice happens is there are some polishes that I don't get around to reviewing for a long time. This is usually because they don't stand out to me later on and I have no idea what I interesting things I can say about them. Today, we have one of those polishes.

Orly Elation Generation
Elation Generation is a warm pink jelly base with holographic glitters mixed in.

Color: This is a nice warm pink jelly. I like the base, and the holographic glitters is a fun and different touch. This is from the spring 2013 Hope and Freedom collection.

Formula. This was a little on the thick side, but nothing terrible.

Price: I got this in a swap, but I think this is around $7?

Overall: Meh. There is nothing wrong with this polish. This just doesn't do much for me? I honestly think if this polish came out 2 years ago, I'd be in love with it. The problem is the indie craze happened, and now this  just isn't very exciting to me. Again, it's not a bad polish. It's a nice polish, but nice is as far as I'd go with it. Sorry.

Orly Boho Bonnet

Hey everyone! I'm back. I've missed you! Many thanks to my great guest posters!

The past week has felt like a lifetime. I am now moved. We are pretty much done with everything except for adding some finishing touches. We have a lot more space, and I know have a desk area to do all my swatching! Can you believe I had been swatching over a coffee table for over 3 years? My back is in BAD shape! I'm still getting used to new surroundings. Transition is not easy for me, but I'll settle in soon. :)

On to polish!

I have for you today a polish from Orly's Hope and Freedom Fest collection. I really liked many of the colors from this collection. I feel Orly has kind of faded into the background lately, and I hope they pick themselves up. I really enjoy the brand, but I don't think they do so well at promoting themselves lately.

Boho Bonnet
Boho Bonnet is a soft muted blue-grey creme.

Color: This is a beautiful creamy soft color. I find this shade very flattering for a pale shade on my pale skin. I love the combination of blue and grey.

Formula: Great formula. I would of expected a color this light to be tricky to apply, but this applied smoothly and evenly. The formula is a bit on the thinner side, but I do not feel that interfered with the application.

Price: I purchased this at Ulta for $8.50.

Overall: Beautiful color with a great formula. I think colors like this one fit into any season and would look good with just about anything. The PolishAholic compared this to Zoya Kristen, and they are similar. While she thinks Zoya Kristen has the better formula, I must disagree. I think Boho Bonnet formula is far superior! You can all can decide that for yourself though, everyone has different formula preferences.

Orly Artificial Sweetener

Once tomorrow is over my life can resume its normal existence. I have a pitiful confession to make. I have serious doctor/hospital phobia...anything medical related really..same goes for dentists. I have my yearly doctor appointment tomorrow, and for the past 3 months I have been dreading it. Now, it's the day before the appointment, and I'm numb. I get really bad panic attacks thinking about going to the doctor. I don't know where I got this from. I think it's the fear that a doctor will find something horribly wrong with me or in the past I had really cold insensitive doctors. Truth is the appointments have always been so not a big deal, but I still freak out?!? It's so stupid, but it's one of the reasons I've not been myself  this month. Yes, a single doctor's appointment will do that to me! I just want it to be over with so I can move on with my life. It's like doomsday. It's so irrational. I realize this, but it's one of those things I've keep private and don't tell anyone. It's out in the open now. I figure maybe sharing this fear will help a bit. Sorry for dumping that on here and thanks for listening!

So awkward transition to nail polish! Here is one from the Orly spring Cool Romance collection.

Artificial Sweetener

Artificial Sweetener is a soft dusty pink with subtle silvery shimmer.

I know this color maybe bland to some, but I love it. It's soft and delicate. I think it's a nice variation from the sheerer nude-pink colors. It's one of those colors I think would work well with most anything you'd wear. It's a very put-together color if that makes sense. I find myself reaching for this one as a palette cleanser too. It is a bit on the sheer side, but builds up nicely in 3 coats.

Send me good vibes for tomorrow please :(

Imperfectly You: Be Brave

Welcome to Imperfectly Painted newest feature, Imperfectly You! I've have been so inspired by your responses to my Talk it Out Tuesday posts and my recent bullying post that I wanted to do more with Imperfectly Painted. I know many of us struggle with self esteem and insecurities. I have found that one of the best ways to gain positivity and strength is through sharing and being open about our experiences. I want Imperfectly You to be that for my readers. This will be either a monthly or twice a month feature where I will feature a nail polish that has name that I think reflects a topic/theme that I feel is important to us as women as far as self esteem building. I will then share my experiences with this topic, and the comment section will be open to you all reflect on your experiences. I want to create a positive and supportive space for all of us, and of course connect it to our love of nail polish. We are all imperfect people, but you know what? That is OK, and we are enough just the way we are.

Today's Topic: Being Brave/Bravery, inspired by Orly Glam FX Be Brave polish.

I think a lot of times we sell ourselves short. It's hard in our lives when we are under a lot of stress or pressure to give ourselves credit. We often feel weak or inadequate when our world does not go the way we expect or want it to. This is simply not true, a lot of things we do in our life are not easy, and we have to be brave to take certain actions or deal with certain emotions. These acts of bravery no matter how small or how big should never get swept under the rug.

My experience with bravery:
I lack the ability a lot of the time to recognize my own bravery. I often find that other people tell me my moments of bravery. Sadly, in the past I would dismiss this, and just say it's not a big deal. Now, I'm learning  to appreciate my moments of bravery and recognize their worth. One of my bravest moments was probably picking up and moving from Dallas, TX to Orlando, FL at 20..alone. I didn't have any friends or family here, but I knew I needed to get away from home. Home was toxic to me, and while my parents were nothing but loving, my hometown was full of painful memories and reminders of a life I wanted to leave behind. So, I left.  I never realized what a bold move that was until so many people approached me and said they could never move away alone like I did. I consider myself an overly cautious person. I don't ride roller coasters or any ride that isn't meant for 3 year olds for that matter. Flying makes me nervous.  I check to make sure the door is locked 923598 before I go to sleep, but I never thought moving almost 1,200 miles away from home wasn't anything to make a fuss about? Crazy. I used to be so hard on myself for not feeling like I'm living up to par with my childhood peers. I ventured into a new city alone. That's not easy! It wasn't easy, and now I try to remember to pat myself on the back about my bravery in regards to this.

Where in your life have you been brave?

Please share your experiences with being brave in the comments below.

Happy Wednesday!
