Julep Maven Intro Box & My Very Long 2 Cents

****Loooooooooooong post ahead! This was after editing.****

I've been blogging for over a year now, and despite the many things I've learned I fall back into old ways. If you remember my "Blogging Revelations" #2 was about how blogging sometimes causes you to make impulsive buying decisions. This is what happened with me and the Julep Maven program.

The Julep Maven program sounds really great. I think what makes it extra enticing in the cool personality-like quiz you take before hand which basically predicts the types of products you are going to receive. The price of the monthly subscription is $20, that is really steep in my book, but since it's nail polish I was going to give it a try. I signed up for the Maven program in early August using a discount code making the introductory box $5. That's no big deal.

My box was mailed out August 15, the expected delivery date of August 24th came and went, and I didn't see my box. In the meantime, I received an email about my September box, and was really put off that I would only be receiving one bottle of nail polish and 2 hand treatments. This bothered me, so I paused my subscription. I contacted Julep about my missing intro box, was told excuses about Hurricane Irene may of caused delays when Irene didn't even come into play during the shipment of that box. After I received that email, I noticed the tracking status on my box suddenly updated again after almost 2 weeks of no movement. It was still in Seattle August 26th, no where near Hurricane Irene or the east coast. Sure it may of been USPS' fault, but around this time is when I found about the referral link drama, so I was starting to scratch my head.

Let me just say I had no intention of using referral links. It's fine if others do, but I don't feel comfortable posting stuff like that on my blog. I do definitely understand the frustration with the referral codes mix-up. I saw a few people benefiting from the referral program, while many others were left in the dark that there was even an issue. This was wrong in my book!

I eventually received my box September 2nd. Here is what I got. I was "American Beauty".

Glycolic Hand Scrub, Cameron, Alfre, & Basecoat

 Cameron a warm pink creme.
 Alfre a silvery-purple frosty shimmer.

For $5 this is a steal! There is no doubt about that. I'm not impressed by fancy hand scrubs, so the hand scrub I didn't find anything spectacular. The polish Cameron I thought was beautiful. The formula on this was a dream. Aflre is really not my cup of tea for a color.

#1 Biggest issue with Julep/Julep Maven program is the price of their products.

Their bottles of polish are .27ml which is almost half of what you get in a standard bottle of polish. These are sold for $14 each. The hand scrub retails for $32. This is really exorbitant to me.

I'm sure you're asking me why I'm complaining about those prices when if I kept the program I'd only being paying $20 for $60 worth of product and I only paid $5 for the first box worth $74? The individual retail prices of these make me cringe. Why? As I nail addict and a nail blogger I know I don't have to spend that type of money for great nails. I have my $10 Lush Lemony Flutter, and I am happy. I have my $2 Sally Hansen dry hand cream I got at CVS beauty sale, and I'm happy. Even if I'm paying $20 for $60 worth of stuff, it doesn't feel right to me as a person and a blogger who preferably shops on a budget. If it was 3-5 bottles of polish, then I might re-consider. I know so much information on nail products, that I already have my favorites, so these high priced items for a steal are meaningless to me.

Honestly I think their prices are pretentious. Perhaps this is why they are giving them away for in their Julep Maven boxes? Is this Julep's fault? Not at all. It is my fault. My fault for being impulsive and not doing any research on this brand and their products. If I had taken the 10 seconds to look up the prices of their products individually I would of never signed up. Plus, I got the impression this was more nail polish vs. nail products.

#2 Their customer service is shaky

All you have to do is go to the Julep Nail Parlor Facebook page and about 40%-50% of the posts on there are complaints and issues. People have been double charged. People have had missing orders. These are not posts from 1 or 2 people, these are posts from handfuls of people. Though Julep I noticed is trying to remedy these situations, it's a little too late.

I understand this is a brand new program,  but they are in way over their heads. I honestly don't think they are intentionally trying to screw people over. I think this just blew up in their faces and they're left scrambling, and probably do not have enough people on their end to deal with it efficiently. In some ways I feel a bit bad, but in others I don't. It's very touchy when you're dealing with money, and when people are being charged for cancelled subscriptions it's a big deal. I also don't like that like myself, many people are having issues with missing orders.

These 2 major issues along with my own missing order leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Oh, on top of that I had a hell of time trying to log on to their site. Passwords they sent never worked, and I eventually had to figure out how to sign up properly. This was a whole other issues, but this post is already long enough.

Would I recommend this program to people?

If you're like me, definitely not. You will not be satisfied, and paying $20 will tug at your heart strings. I do see how this program would be liked by others. It does offer some high end products for a reduced price. If was in dark on nail products and had interest in trying something higher end. I may like this program.

That being said, I wouldn't subscribe to it now. If you do have an interest in this program. I strongly recommend you wait it out. I'd keep an eye out on their Facebook page and blogs about this program. I think it's very shaky right now. I'd wait until you see some more stability in how they deal with issues and etc before you commit.

Needless to say, I cancelled my subscription. I'm sticking to my birchbox. I think why I like birchbox so much is introduces me to products I never would of tried or known about. I do not have a lot of insight into skincare and cosmetics, so I'm enjoying the products in my birchbox. Does this make sense? I don't think I'd ever be satisfied with nail polish style box, I know way too much, and have too many products!

Sorry for this SUPER long post. I just wanted to let others know my experience, and bring attention to Julep issues outside of the obvious referral link one.

Happy Monday!

UPS Rant

This is a non-nail polish related angry rant at UPS. If you don't want to read me rant about UPS, you probably don't want to read this. GRRRRRR

Ok, so UPS has seriously lost their mind. I had ordered some Bath & Body Works products a week ago and they shipped them UPS. I correctly listed my address. I always check this to make sure. It was being sent UPS and yesterday it said it was "Out for Delivery". Yay! I love getting pacakges..but no...

Around 5:30pm the status updated to "EXCEPTION- UPS is looking for the correct street address". So, I'm like WTF? I checked the invoice again, and the address is listed correctly. I've lived in the same exact address for almost 4 years and I get 2-3 packages from UPS a month without any problems. I live in an apartment complex which I can understand makes things more confusing, but this has NEVER been an issue ever. I've always received my packages.

I call the UPS center here and explained my situation.  I verified the address with the lady and she said that is what is listed in the computer and she would call the driver. I know for sure that even before a package is mailed through the UPS system the address has to be confirmed as an accurate address. My Dad has a business and uses UPS to ship and he verified this too through his system with my address to make sure. Everything was correct. The lady on the phone said she'd call me right back.

2 hours later... I get a call from the person at UPS telling me the same driver who has serviced this area for 10 years cannot find my address. He was in the apartment...he found my apartment number, but said it wasn't in the building it was supposed to be in? There are no other buildings in this complex with my apartment number.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. I went outside and checked my building and address number..nothing has changed. Did I slip into another dimension? Am I in a episode of Twilight Zone, Doctor Who, Star Trek, or Candid Camera? I love how UPS talks to me as if I'm the one who has lost my mind. How can a driver who I've had visit my apartment to deliver packages almost 100 times in 4 years not be able to find my apartment anymore?

I have a feeling UPS is lying to me. I think either this was a different driver OR the driver wanted to leave early so he put in that he couldn't find the address.... They are going to try and re-deliver today. I had to give them more specific direction. What floor I was on...what side of the building I was on..really? We'll see...I just know if this was nail polish I'd be way more pissed off....

What gives UPS?

We'll see if it's a "Happy Tuesday!" :P

Advertising/Spamming

Hey there everyone!

I really tried to tolerate this as much as I could, but it's becoming a constant issue in my comments lately. I don't want to be rude or hurt anyones feelings, but people constantly posting links their blog in my comment section is getting frustrating.

I've never felt a need to make a rule about this, but it has been increasing lately. Honestly, I do not mind if you post a link to your blog once in my comment section. I don't think it's the best blog etiquette, but I know being new to blogging can be challenging and you are unaware of what is considered polite and what isn't. What I have an issue with is the people who either..

1. Comment daily and always add a link to their blog after their comment. If you've already posted your link once, please do not post it again.
2. Give me some disingenuous comment like "cool!" and then link to your blog. This goes along with number #1. Most people who do this are the people who are regularly "comment" and add a link to their blog every time. This is very transparent, I know you are only posting that to get away with posting a link to your blog. I can tell the difference between who is sincere and who is not.
3. People who just post a link to their blog and nothing else.
4. People who tell me in the comments "Follow me and I'll follow you back" with a link to their blog.

Starting today I will be deleting comments that exhibit any of  what is listed above. As I said before, I honestly do not mind if you post a link to your blog once. I'm giving you a free pass here because I know not everyone is aware that isn't exactly polite. I'm really cracking down on the people who abuse the commenting system continually to advertise themselves.

**I of course don't mind if you send me links to your blog to receive awards or you want to share a link with me in order to show me something that relates to my post etc.**

All of this being said, if you would like to share your blog with me you can always email me, tweet it to me, or facebook message it to me. You can find access to all of those things on the social media buttons on the right sidebar of my page. I enjoy reading new blogs. I was a newbie once too, and I know people are eager to gain a following. I think there are far more appropriate ways to get a following. These are just a few things that helped me. I'm in no way an expert on blogging, but I've found these methods to be successful.

1. Follow blogs you enjoy. Leave sincere comments on peoples posts that you like, no links!Usually, people will return the favor.
2. Get a twitter account and start getting to know other bloggers.
3. Make sure you are blogging for the right reasons. Blogging is something that should be fun and enjoyable. It is very obvious when people blog just to get free samples or unnecessary attention.
4. Most of all be genuine. This goes along with #3. People can easily tell if you're not.

The main thing is be yourself! Be real! I hope my list of suggestions doesn't come as I think I'm a know it all. I wasn't writing that for that purpose. I've received questions in the past asking how to get a following, and I figured with the subject manner of this post I might as well throw those things out there.

That's my little rant for the day. Sorry, if I've offended anyone. Just remember starting today I will be removing comments that have links in them that have already posted links before.

Happy Wednesday!

Chanel Paradoxal Rant!

Last week my poll question was "How much are you willing to spend on a bottle of nail polish?"

Here were the results...
under $5: 20%
$5-$10: 61%
$10-$20: 19%
20+: 0%

If you're new to my blog you may not know, but on this blog I won't review anything over $10. That's just my nail polish philosophy. The reason I love nail polish so much as a hobby is because you don't need to spend a lot to enjoy great nail polish. As we all know there are star polishes from even the cheapest of brands. One reason I started this blog was to show others who want to save money how they can find or create affordable nail products.

I'd have to say the most I'm willing to spend on a nail polish is exactly $10, but that is a rarity. I may do that few times a year. I have 3 BB Couture polishes I spent around $9 on. That's the most I personally spent. On average I usually won't spend more than $4 on nail polish. If it's more than $4 I usually cringe and will only buy if I have some sort of coupon.

I have to admit I had a bit of a reason for posting that poll question this week. I wanted to test the waters before I made a bit of rant over the hype of Chanel Paradoxal. Since no one voted they'd spend more than 20+ I feel a bit more comfortable about being a little more opinionated.

Note: These are purely my opinions. If you want to buy something go for it! I just want to throw out there how I feel about something. I don't want to cause division or conflict in the nail community, but when I have a strong opinion on something I feel I should share.

I don't get the hype around Chanel Paradoxal (Photos from All Lacquered Up). This nail polish is $23! There are some great polishes out there that really speak to me that are over $10. I love many Nfu-Oh flakies and Lippmann heavily packed crazy shaped glitters. I can justify people wanting to spend the extra $$$ for those.

My main complaint with Paradoxal is that sure it looks like unique color with some shimmer, but that does not look like something that you couldn't easily franken or find a similar color of for cheaper. Nfu-Oh flakies or the glitter Lippmanns would be impossible to find dupes of and very difficult to franken with those unique glitters.

$23 is a lot of money especially to me as college student, but even if I had that to spare I'd want to spend on more than 1 bottle of polish especially in Paradoxal's case. It makes me wonder if Paradoxal being the same exact color that it is would have the same amount of hype if it were a Wet n Wild polish or Revlon polish? I wonder if the hype is around the brand name "Chanel" itself. I've heard a few nail blogger comment that quality of the polish isn't that great either? I just don't know if the hype about it is clouded some peoples judgment where they feel the NEED this polish rather than it being some they genuinely want and like.

I honestly don't get it. If this polish speaks to you and you want to spend money on it go for it. I don't want anyone to think I think badly of you because of that or anything. Like, I said I am also tempted by some more expensive brands. I really just don't understand it with Paradoxal. It's like when you're around a group of people and everyone is in on some inside joke and you're the one sitting outside really confused. That's how I feel is there something I'm completely missing that everyone else is getting? I just hope I'm not the only one out there who feels this way! :P

So, in exchange for my whining about this I'm going to take on mission. I don't think it's fair for me to complain and rant about this with out actually testing out my theory. I'm going take on the mission to make a franken as close to Chanel Paradoxal as possible for under $10 OR find a near dupe alternative. It may not be an exact dupe, but I will try to make it so it would be equally as appealing as this Chanel. I will have this mission completed in the next few weeks. Be on the look out for it!

How much is the most you'd spend on a bottle of nail polish? What are your thoughts on Chanel Paradoxal?

All opinions are welcome just because I don't care for something shouldn't make you feel like you can't express your opinions. I want to hear all sides of the story! I also want to make known that I'm not saying polishes that are at a higher cost are not worth purchasing. I just personally don't think Paradoxal is one of those in my opinion.

Sorry I didn't have any pretty pictures today :(

Happy Monday!
